Web Design

I like web design because it integrates diverse skill sets that it keep me interested. Through my years as a web designer I have learned complex markup and scripting languages, understood the importance of user-centered design, studied good design, and worked on a complex lifecycle that information driven web sites and online applications incur.

Many of my web designs I produce are intricately tied to a task-oriented, functional design. I don't do a lot of client-facing splash pages, promotional sites, and other marketing tools. I pride myself in the ability to get to the bottom of a usability problem by listening to users, asking the right questions, and using many years of practical experience.

I design, I code, and I think about how things can be better.

Online Advertisements, 2006

These four ads ere produced to increase attention paid to a (then) upcoming release of Viewpoint Media Player. View the placement at Viewpoint Developer Central.

Online Installation Utility, 2006

The VMP installatio process has been, over the years, largely managed and designed by me. In the latest incarnation, I feel I was given the most liberty to break from the past and attempt a stronger branding presence. Coupled with a smoother insallation process, this is my favorite, and final, version. (Click Thumbnail to preview installer.)

Online Installation Utility, 2003

A visual walk-through of a utlity I not only designed, but built from scratch. All logic, DHTML, JS, and proprietary Viewpoint Media Player integration was my responsibility. There have been 3 visual designs, 2 variations, and 5 functional generations of this utility. The last incarnation was PERL based.

Ad Campaign Creation/Management/Reporting Tool, 2007

Fuse is an online tool to build, traffick, and view reports for online advertising campaigns. The key design goal for this redesign was branding and usability. After a major revamp of the reporting section, pulling 4 linear pages to one AJAX enabled page, and a skinning of the remaining application, we achieved those goals.

Online Application, 2003

Viewpoint Creative Innovator is a best of breed online marketing tool for campaign management, interactive content assembly, and tracking. I designed the user interface for this 18 month (v 1.0) project from specifications, usability testing, and user feedback. I also oversaw the majority of the UI implementation over this time with 2 back end developers.

Developer Oriented Web Site, 2004

With a more clear visual direction to the main web site, I feel this incarnation of Developer Central is most visually appealing. What lies under the hood is far superior to anything I had created before-- a custom designed group based security model, user-level administration, group-dependant menus and pages, and a highly interactive DHTML based help system. I oversaw a group of 2 JSP and Oracle developers and 2 content authors, reporting my progress to the VP of Engineering and the SVP of Operations at Viewpoint.

Developer Oriented Web Site, 2002-2003

( URL no longer active. )
This text heavy, content-rich web site hosts hundreds of individually hand crafted pages. The audience, developers of Viewpoint's proprietary content, find resources based on groups. While I do believe, given more design freedom, I could have met more of my goals, this is a great case study for high impact, low-resource development. I designed, maintained, built, and architected this web site solo.

These designs are final design proposals or production ready graphics for Dreamlife.com. I served as Web Designer (assisting the Senior Designer), and in the case of the Dreamlife store, served as lead designer. I helped determine the functionality of the side menus, the layout of the store, and the workflow of a course design.
